The term 'fula' is derived from the word Fulani; (it is also a common
language for countries in West Africa); when the slaves saw the
Indo-Guyanese Muslims observing Ramadan, Eids etc., in their newly adopted homeland they referred to them as fulaman.

I first met Ousame in 2003 whilst photographing him for a project
called ‘New Boy’, about teenage refugees living in London. Since
the project we have stayed in contact and I have documented his life in London thus far; the various places he has lived, his friends and family, wife and child. It is a privilege to be let into his world to document his new life here.
